Make a Change With Your Next cherrichella Shoe Purchase

Australia's Great Barrier Reef

World Environment Day is just around the corner on June 5, 2021. The day brings awareness and calls for urgent action to protect and preserve our damaged ecosystems around the world. Here at cherrichella, we take a considered approach across all areas of our business – from the sustainable materials we choose, to the limited size runs of each shoe style we produce, to our unique packaging and the way we give back to our community. We are proud to partner with i=Change and we pledge $1 for every shoe sold to an Australian charity project, chosen by you, our valued customers. One of these projects that we hold very close to our hearts is to Secure the Future of the Great Barrier Reef, the world’s largest living organism and one of our homegrown national treasures.

For the rest of the world, the Great Barrier Reef is an absolute beauty and who can blame them? Crystal clear waters, gorgeous coral, weird and wonderful marine life – there are plenty of reasons why it’s one of the world’s 7 natural wonders. In Australia, the reef is more than just a bucket list travel destination, it’s a very personal thing:

  • The Great Barrier Reef has been the home for first Australians, supporting the livelihoods of 70 Traditional Owner groups, who have been its custodians for more than 60,000 years.
  • It makes up about 10% of the world’s coral reef ecosystems, covering 344,400 km2 in area. That’s bigger than Victoria and Tasmania combined!
  • 600 types of corals, 100 species of jellyfish, 1,625 types of fish, 30 species of wales and dolphins and 133 types of sharks and rays, plus many more, share this ecosystem as their home.

Since 1985, the Great Barrier Reef has lost 50% of its coral cover and more than 10 million tonnes of sediment from eroded gullies flow onto the Reef every year. By 2030, Greening Australia and Traditional Owners aim to restore 2,000 hectares of eroded land and 10,000 hectares of wetlands to help prevent pollution of the Reef, improve water quality and the Reef’s resilience to bounce back against climate change. This is where YOU come in.
